This course has been carefully designed for those wishing to become a falconer in pest control. Over the 5 days you will learn everything you need to know about the art of falconry and then on the fifth you will get to see what its like using a bird of prey to deter pigeons or gulls.
The course is structured in easy to follow stages which will ensure that by the end of the 4 days, any student will be confident in the basics of handling birds of prey. On the fifth day you will be out with one of our technicians and experiencing first hand the job of bird control
This course is compiled from a combined knowledge of 60 years of falconry.

The first day starts at our base at Coolings Green and Pleasant, Knockholt, with introductions, complimentary drinks and an outline of the day.
The morning session includes talks, discussions and demonstrations, covering the following aspects:
- Handling birds and safety.
- How to manage and care for birds of prey.
- Basic falconry equipment; learn about perches, jesses, swivels, leashes, gloves and bags.
- Discover how to transport birds of prey safely; Learn about tying and the Falconer’s knot.
- Understand manning; Learn about how to build a bird’s trust in you and get them used to being handled and close to people.
- The balance between weight and food; How to keep the bird fit and well nourished.
- How to train your bird to return to your gloved fist.
After lunch, we’ll go on a ‘Hawk Walk’ in the Kent countryside. You have a chance to handle the birds and start developing some field handling skills.
By the end of the first day, you’ll be energised by your new knowledge and falconry skills and looking forward to the second day!
We start the second day with a recap of topics covered on the first day and a short presentation.
The morning session will turn basic falconry knowledge into practical skills. Using demonstrations, we will show you how to look after your birds, covering all aspects of food preparation and diet/weight control. You’ll be taught how to spot if a bird is ‘below par’, so that dietary changes can be made. You’ll also be shown how to house falcons, hawks and owls, so that they are happy and healthy.
After a complimentary lunch, we shall return to the field to learn brush up on existing skills and try out some more advanced falconry techniques. You will be handling the birds and developing confidence with them.
Back at the office, we have will have time for discussion and questions and finish at 4pm.
This will be your last day at our centre before going out tomorrow on your work experience day. The early morning will be spent going over everything you have learnt over the past 3 days before having a theory exam. After lunch you will be taken to the fields where a transmitter will be hidden and you will have to find to prove that you are capable of tracking down a bird should it become lost. Finally a live assessment will take place where you will have complete control of a bird to show us that your are competent in all aspects of flying a bird of pre
You will be placed with one of our Bird control team, where you will witness first hand what is like to work with these majestic animals. You will be privileged to such landmarks as Trafalgar Square, The Olympic Stadium or The O2 Arena.
Using your newly acquired skills, and under the careful watch of our falconer you will fly a Harris hawk in an urban environment, seeing how these highly intelligent birds operate within a working environment.
